We are pleased to announce that the IAS together with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will be organizing the

 2^nd IAS School on Particle Physics & Cosmology and Implications for Technology

 from 2 to 6 February 2015 at the Nanyang Executive Centre, NTU.  The School is strongly supported by participating institutions such as the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the NTU School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

 The School aims to provide advanced graduate students and young postdocs and faculty from Asia and elsewhere with a high-profile platform to keep up-to-date with the latest discoveries and advances not just in their own field of research, but also the broader trends and perspectives in related fields beyond.  The program is composed of core lectures and discussion sessions by distinguished lecturers. The School will also include special seminars by distinguished visitors on particle physics, cosmology and implications for applied physics and technology. The physics themes include the Standard Model of Particle Physics and Beyond, Frontiers in Cosmology, the Nature of the Neutrino, CP Violation, and Physics of Technology.

Op donderdag 12 februari 2015 wordt de Bètadag alweer voor de 9e keer georganiseerd. Dit jaar zal de dag plaatsvinden op een recordaantal van 10 universiteiten verspreid door heel Nederland.

Tijdens deze dag kunnen leerlingen uit 3 HAVO en 3 VWO kennis maken met Bèta op de universiteit en zien wat je later met een natuurprofiel kunt gaan studeren. De dag is geheel opgezet door studenten, waardoor het een ongedwongen sfeer heeft. Het programma is op iedere Bètadag anders, waardoor iedere dag iets anders biedt. In het programma zal in ieder geval een aantal proefjes zitten, een korte lezing zijn en natuurlijk veel contact met de studenten. De precieze invulling van de verschillende programma’s is te vinden op de website www.betadagen.nl.

Deelname is geheel gratis en opgeven kan via de website www.betadagen.nl/site/aanmelden/ tot 1 februari aanstaande. Het is ook mogelijk om direct een aantal scholieren op te geven en als begeleider mee te gaan. De Bètadag is het evenement voor scholieren om te bepalen of zij een natuurprofiel willen kiezen en wat ze er later mee kunnen doen. Voor meer informatie kunt u mailen naar info@betadagen.nl.

Ter gelegenheid van de uitreiking van de Lorentzmedaille aan Sir Michael Berry organiseert de KNAW op 23 februari 2015 een symposium over het werk van Berry onder de titel Fantastic Light.
