FYSICA

Friday 11 April

Organized by the Netherlands' Physical Society (NNV) and Leiden University

Fysica 2025

The Gorlaeus building of Leiden University, venue of the congress

Fysica 2025

Marjolein Dijkstra (UU), winner of the Physica Prize 2025 will hold the traditional Physica Prize lecture. She has made significant contributions to advancing physics in the Netherlands, not only through her mentorship of dozens of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers but also through her active involvement in shaping physics policy. Dijkstra was among the first physicists in the Netherlands to explore the field of active (self-propelled) particles, which has since become an active field in soft matter physics.

FYSICA 2024

On 12 april 2024, Eindhoven University of Technology hosted FYSICA. Under the umbrella 'Physics at the Human Scale', various focus sessions were offered. Physics prize winner 2024 Florian Schreck talked about his research and we were honored and proud that 2023 Nobel Laureate Anne L'Huillier gave a keynote address.

FYSICA 2023

Fysica 2023 was a collaboration with the TU Delft. The program focused on a wide spectrum of physics: from quantum to biophysics and from imaging to education. The Nobel Prize 2022 was discussed as well as diversity in the physics community. As a special event, FYSICA 2023 closed with a piano concert with quantum music.

FYSICA 2022

FYSICA 2022 was a roaring success, we were happy that we could organise FYSICA on site again at University of Twente. Ronald Hanson (QuTech, TU Delft) and Peter Bauer (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Reading, UK) gave excellent lectures. We loved the finals of the Young Speakers Contest. In the afternoon we offered a wide range of interesting focus sessions, all of them were fully booked. The lunch tours to different labs were very popular too.

FYSICA 2021

Due to the corona pandemic, FYSICA 2021 took place in Zoom on April 16th. We celebrated the centennial of the NNV with a great program: excellent speakers varying from young scientists to Physica Prize Laureate Daniel Bonn and two Nobel Prize Laureates Reinhard Genzel and Roger Penrose. The NNV received the title royal out of the hands of the commissioner of the King of Noord-Holland. FYSICA 2021 ended with a fantastic physics pubquiz. Recordings available.

FYSICA 2020

FYSICA 2020 was planned at University of Twente on April 17th. Due to the corona pandemic we had the change FYSICA into an online event very fast. It turned out to be a great success. Over 600 people attended the meeting in Zoom. We had wonderful speakers: Nobel Prize Laureate Didier Queloz and Physica Prize Laureate Martin van Hecke. The Young Speakers Contest had excellent finalists, so the audience had a hard time to vote for one of them. The recordings are available.

FYSICA 2019

The main stage of FYSICA 2019 was in a purpose-built pavilion on Amsterdam Science Park. This year's edition attracted well over 500 physicists, who enjoyed two rounds of tours to 9 institutes at the park at lunchtime. Most stayed for the luscious specially-discounted Suriname-style buffet and evening show. Many excellent speakers presented their work in between the opening lecture by Physica Prize winner Kobus Kuibers and Nobel Prize laureate Gérard Mourou in the early evening. The full program can be downloaded here

FYSICA 2018

The Educatorium of Utrecht University was the place to be at 13 April 2018. FYSICA 2018, was a great edition with many excellent speakers, among them Nobel Prize laureate Barry Barish and Physicaprize laureate Maria Antonietta Loi. The full program can be downloaded here

FYSICA 2017

At FYSICA 2017, 'local hero' Ben Feringa, professor at University of Groningen and winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016, mesmerized us physicists by showing his work on molecular machines. All speakers and sessions are listed in the program of the event.

FYSICA 2016

We felt very honoured that one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2015, Takaaki Kajita, attended FYSICA 2016 and gave a lecture. The program of FYSICA 2016 can be found here. As you can see in the program, spectacular recent breakthroughs in (astro)physics, like quantum entanglement and gravitational waves, were brought to the public. Please find a description of the program (in Dutch) by clicking here.

FYSICA 2015

On Friday April 10th, FYSICA 2015 took place at Eindhoven University of Technology. All kinds of physicist attended the meeting: teachers, industrial physicists, students and academics. It was a day full of exiting physics. The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). FYSICA 2015 paid attention to the International Year of Light, with parts of the programme focussing on light and light-based technologies. Click here to look at the program of FYSICA 2015.

FYSICA 2014

FYSICA 2014 was hosted by Leiden University on 1 April. You can find the program of FYSICA 2014 here.

FYSICA 2013
FYSICA 2013 took place at TU Delft, in the Aula Conference Centre (building number 20).

Nobelprize winner 2012 Serge Haroche will give a lecture on individual quantum systems.
Focus sessions: Quantum science and applications, Frontiers of imaging, Energy for the future, Information storage and Technology '2050'.
EPJ Young Speakers Contest: three young scientists will try to convince the audience by giving a presentation about their research.
Lecture by Willem Vos (UT): Looking in and through opaque material.
On the FYSICA-market there will be plenty of opportunities to contact interesting companies and institutes.
Lecture by Marileen Dogterom (Amolf): Building a living cell with glass and gold.
Evening programme (free entrance): De jacht op de Higgs.
